Soaring to New Heights

The development of life and employability skills helps young adults to build confidence both in spoken skills and for group collaboration and cooperation. In a constantly changing environment, having life and employability skills is an essential part of being able to meet the challenges of everyday life, not only now, when our children are young, but for their future success. To cope with the increasing pace and changes of modern life, youth need new life skills such as the ability to deal with stress and frustration, effective communication strategies, how to be a team member and more. Today's youth will face many challenges over the course of their life with associated pressures and the need for flexibility. 

WINGS...Lessons for Life & Living aims to empower young adults with the tools they need to not only be successful in the workplace but in their personal lives as well. The fun and interactive five module program provides the following benefits:

  • Get My Future - Interest and life skills assessment to identify potential careers, areas of strengths and challenges. The assessment measure consists of 113 items that assess skills, knowledge, and awareness in six areas (Daily Living, Self-Care, Relationships & Communication, Housing & Money Management, Career and Education Planning, and Looking Forward)

  • Getting to Know You – A per session elevator speech to prepare the participant for public speaking and the job interview.

  • Communication – Strategies to empower participants to understand the importance of being specific when offering and receiving communication. Participants will learn to recognize how they provide information to others, and to consider how others prefer to receive information.

  • Enthusiasm and Attitude – Strategies to develop a positive attitude, showcase this to others, connect attitude to leadership skills and to showcase this to peers and potential employers.

  • Teamwork – To identify and understand the importance of teamwork to workplace and personal success and the specific role each individual on a team may play. Participants will learn about positive teamwork behavior and discover how they own conduct can impact others on a team.

  • Networking – Focuses on the process of networking and its relevance and importance to career development. Participants will learn about taking initiative and overcome fear, informational interviewing, social media, text and networking etiquette.

  • Problem Solving & Critical Thinking – This workshop provides learning opportunities to solve problems in a variety of ways in the workplace, life and in the community. Participants will learn the importance of having their voice heard in the community and be provided an opportunity to register to vote.

  • Professionalism – In this module, each of the five individual soft skills above (communication, enthusiasm/attitude, teamwork networking and problem solving/critical things) are revisited in a broader framework. Participants will lean the blending and integration of these variety of skills and how it results in professionalism.

  • Social Networking – Social Networking is a “hot topic” for the WINGS participants and in this module, they learn about the difference in communication skills based on generational and cultural differences, the benefits and hazards of social networking vs. face to face communication, and how potential employers use social networking platforms to make hiring decisions.

  • Self-Awareness & Self-Advocacy – The objective for this section is to ensure participants can define and identify situations of self-awareness and self-advocacy, and identify their personal strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. An emphasis is placed on effective strategies for self-advocacy.

  • Creating My History & Defining My Future – This is multi-session module will result in the completion of a job readiness questioner, master job application, vision board and introduction to resume components.

  • Interview Skills & Techniques – Knowledge is power, and this module provides knowledge and preparation tips and tools for the interview. This section is designed to provide participants with a step-by-step checklist for identifying a job, interviewing and appropriate follow up. Participants will be able to easily answer common interview questions, present their elevator speaks and learn about researching a company prior to applying and become adapt in the interview process.

Many of  the above program components are offered in the WINGS workshops, they are also available on an individual basis to any individual.
